Our Story
Founded on the belief that families deserve unhurried legal counsel
Lentera Keluarga was established in Kuala Lumpur after years of observing families walk away from legal consultations more confused than when they arrived. Appointments were too short, options were presented without context, and the emotional weight of the situation was rarely acknowledged.
We built Lentera Keluarga around a different model — one where the first session is long enough to actually understand a family's situation, where documents are written in plain English, and where a client can take time to think before committing to any path.
Our name draws on the Malay word for lantern. The intention is modest but sincere — to bring a little light into a difficult corridor without rushing anyone through it.
Our Practice Values
-
Unhurried Counsel
We do not rush a session to meet a billing target. If a matter needs more time, we make room for it.
-
Strict Confidentiality
Every matter is handled under legal professional privilege. We take discretion seriously — not as a policy, but as a foundation.
-
Plain Language Documents
Legal documents are reviewed with the client line by line, in language they can actually read and remember.
-
The Family's Long-Term Welfare
Our advice is shaped by what will actually serve the family — including children and elderly dependants — not only what is legally possible.
The People You Will Meet
A small team, carefully assembled
Rashidah Azmi

Specialising in matrimonial asset drafting and estate coordination, Khairul brings particular experience in EPF nominations, joint-property agreements, and blended-family arrangements across civil and Syariah jurisdictions.
Serena Wong
Client Relations & Administration
The first voice most clients hear, Serena coordinates appointments, manages client files with care, and ensures every practical detail is attended to so that solicitor time is spent where it matters most — listening.
How We Work
Professional standards we hold ourselves to
Malaysian Bar Compliance
All solicitors at Lentera Keluarga hold current practising certificates under the Malaysian Bar and adhere to the Legal Profession Act 1976 and its subsidiary regulations.
Client Data Protection
Client files are held under protocols aligned with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Electronic records are encrypted; physical files are stored in secured cabinets accessible only to the engaged solicitor.
Conflict of Interest Checks
Every new client engagement is preceded by a conflict-of-interest check. Where a conflict exists, we decline the matter and, where appropriate, suggest alternative practitioners.
Plain-English Documentation
Drafts are written with clarity in mind and reviewed with the client before signing. We do not consider a document complete until the client can explain its meaning in their own words.
Continuing Professional Development
Our solicitors meet the Malaysian Bar's CPD requirements and attend family law updates, including developments in Syariah family proceedings, each calendar year.
Transparent Fee Structure
Fees for each engagement are discussed and agreed in writing before work begins. We do not add charges that were not part of the initial fee agreement without prior discussion and client consent.
Our Approach
Family law in Malaysia — what good practice looks like
Family law in Malaysia operates across two parallel legal systems — the civil courts, which handle matters for non-Muslim Malaysians and civil marriages, and the Syariah courts, which govern Muslim family matters including divorce, custody, and matrimonial assets. Navigating the intersection of these systems requires a solicitor who understands both frameworks and can advise clearly on which applies to a given family's situation.
Lentera Keluarga focuses on the civil family law dimension while maintaining working relationships with Syariah practitioners in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley. Where a client's matter touches both jurisdictions — as in a civil-Syariah conversion dispute, or a property division that involves both registered land and EPF — we coordinate advice across both.
Our view of good family law practice is simple: it should make a difficult situation slightly less bewildering, not more. That means clear advice, documents written to be understood, and a firm that answers the phone and returns messages reliably. We believe that is a reasonable baseline — and one worth committing to.
A good starting point
Start with a conversation, not a commitment.
A pre-filing consultation at Lentera Keluarga is a structured conversation — not a sales pitch. We help you understand your options and leave the decision entirely with you.
